COUNCIL LEADER STATEMENT RESPONSE |
EAST GLYNNEATH RESIDENTS AGAINST CONTAMINATION RESPONSE TO THE COUNCIL LEADER'S STATEMENT On the 22nd October 2020 the Neath-Port Talbot Council Leader made a statement relating to the Heol y Glyn development in Glynneath, his statement begins: "There has been a great deal of rumour and misinformation on social media." To the best of our knowledge our group have been the only people placing information about the development on social media. In particular we have been pointing members of the public to a document that provides evidence that the Neath-Port Talbot Council breached the 1990 Environmental Protection Act when they failed to test land that was identified as contaminated as required by the act. The report shows that in 2010 the planning department failed to follow council protocol which aligns itself with the act. The report also suggests that this breach has endangered the lives of Glynneath residents and may even have caused the death of some. Eighteen Neath-Port Talbot Councillors are in possession of this document including all fifteen members of the planning committee and the two local councillors from Glynneath. The document offers the council the opportunity to refute these allegations but they have failed to respond with documentary evidence that proves otherwise. That the Council Leader has made a generic statement without providing any evidence against our findings, and has labelled our document as rumour and misinformation calls into question the integrity of both the Council Leader and the Neath-Port Talbot Councillors in possession of this document. The East Glynneath Residents Against Contamination will continue to fight for our right to live in place where our families can grow up safely. We call for a full public (non-government) independent investigation into the actions of the Neath-Port Talbot Council in relation to this development. If we refer to the purpose of the Neath-Port Talbot Council. "Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council exists to serve and represent the interests of its citizens and communities. We strive to improve the economic, social, environmental and cultural well-being of all of our people." The Council Leader's actions clearly fail to observe this purpose. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION - We first alerted the Council Leader to the possibility of this malpractice in April 2020 when we requested further information about the chemical testing of the contaminated land. We provided evidence of deception used by a planning official to avoid this question and since that date the council leader and all other employees and councillors of the Neath-Port Talbot Council have refused to provide evidence that the land was remediated correctly in accordance with the 1990 Environmental Protection Act. The information provided to the Council Leader shows that the actions of the NPTC Planning Department and Committee have placed the lives of Glynneath residents at risk from untreated carcinogens on the land since 2010. The Council Leader's statement does nothing to alleviate our concerns. |
