Dai's walk around Wales blog - April 2023

1 April 2023

36-20230401-ss.jpg (250081 bytes)

I rode to Aberavon Beach to witness sunset and it was such a promising build up with clear skies that the eventual event was quite disappointing as the sun dropped into the Swansea cloud bank and never came out again even though at the beginning there was a nice gap for it to drop into. The Swansea cloud gremlins strike again. I desperately needed a foreground and went for the spray coming off some really good sets of waves, the sea being devoid of surfers which I found quite unusual for Aberavon.

Looking at the photos and the mish mash of water I suspect a scientist would call this chaos. Predicting how a wave forms, its shape, its direction is impossible I would say from just using sight. Wave formation I would suspect is mainly due to the direction and speed of water flow and pressure. Its not chaos, its just too complex for us to understand and too difficult and costly for us to determine the patterns and/or outcomes involved.

A couple of swans have uprooted themselves and are nesting in the canal opposite Llantwit Road canal lane. This is the first time I've managed to capture them off the nest and so we can see that the hen has laid 3 eggs.

On my way to Neath I discovered I was riding past a British Championship series event in Rheola Forest so I took time out to check it out. I ended up spending about 90 minutes interviewing the race organiser, competitors, spectators, a mechanic and a sponsor together with Baden in whose 'garden' the event was taking place.

For the second year in a row I cycled past the Galv in the Melyn to discover a fire in the knotweed. Last year, the perps were on hand watching, but this year the perps had disappeared unless the guy with a dog was the culprit. He said he'd rung the fire brigade and within 5 minutes the fire was attended by White Watch fire brigade, Cimla, Neath. Video to follow

A South Wales Police community event at the Glynneath Town Hall to raise local issues in which we, GRAC raised concerns about the Gerry Reynolds destruction of information. The police refused to accept any information and directed us towards the 101 reporting process. We stated that we had been through 101 and they did not investigate it. We made a brief presentation that included the main issues with the Gerry Reynolds event. Inspector Lindsay Sweeney took our contact details and said she would be in touch. She hadn't by 21 May 2023 so we sent her a video communication.

SCHMOO'S CYCLES MEMORIES

A ride with Graham Rogerson to the Monument in Margam Park and to the opening of Bethel Cafe in Pontrhydyfen, owned by our mutual friends Peter & Jackie Bowen. During the ride we discover that Graham has bought and is now living in my Auntie Vera's house. Auntie Vera was my father's sister, she was my Godmother.
