Dai Richards is best known for his
contribution to sport in Wales. In 2009 Inside Welsh Sport
Magazine named him Wales' Fittest Man following a
distinguished career in which he represented Wales in
6 different sports; cyclo cross, triathlon, mountain biking,
mountain running, duathlon and marathon kayaking. In
2000 he won the world quadrathlon championship
(swimming, cycling, running & kayaking) in the veteran's
category and the
following year was named the Neath Port Talbot Sports
Personality of the Year. He established the first
college Triathlon Academy in Britain at Neath port
Talbot College and was chairman of Wales' largest
triathlon club. For a day job he is the managing director of Rugby Relics Ltd (established 1991), the world's leading supplier of Rugby Memorabilia, his collection of rugby memorabilia is recognised as one of the finest in the world. Born in Neath, but raised in Port Talbot his family roots are firmly anchored in Neath, in 1891 all 4 sets of his great grandparents lived within a stone's throw of Neath Town Centre including William Henry Snow who at one time employed over 300 men in his Snow's building and construction company. His great great grand father Thomas Snow is credited with building the iconic Victoria Gardens in Neath. He currently lives in Glynneath with his wife Hayley. They have 4 children and 4 grand children. A veteran of the Territorial Army he served as a physical training instructor with the Royal Corps of Transport and Royal Regiment of Wales. For fun he works as an extra on film and TV, and can be seen in Sherlock, Wolf Hall, Decline and Fall, Casualty, and the locally filmed Pride. Acting is in the family he says, he is distantly related to the Wales' first Oscar winner, Ray Milland, the Neath born actor. For the last 4 years he has been the Chairman of a resident's group in Glynneath fighting for the safety of his community who are living next to a contaminated landfill site, formerly owned by the Neath Council and the Cuddy Group Ltd. In 2016 his book about the origin, evolution and governance of sport was published. Research into a follow up publication led him into the political arena when he discovered controversial material in children's play education. He describes himself more of a 'political scientist' than anything else and is looking forward to establishing Reform UK as a major political force in the area at present. |
